One owner, one truck, one yard on South H Street. Here's how a retired restoration company owner ended up running Richmond's highest-rated dumpster company.
Before the dumpsters, Jeff owned Tri-State Cleaning and Restoration here in Richmond and ran it for 18 years. If you've lived in Wayne County a while, there's a fair chance he's been in your house or your neighbor's. He sold the company, retired, and made it about two months.
It wasn't a grand plan. In his own words: "Honestly, I didn't make the connection myself. I was just exploring some things to do after I sold my business." What settled it was 18 years of knowing people here. "Obviously knowing a lot of people in Richmond like I do, a lot of business people, a lot of realtors, I felt like the market was there."
He bought a roll-off setup and opened J's Dumpster Rentals in January 2022. He still has that first dumpster.
Jeff will tell you he's running this company on the same principles as the last one. "I've treated my dumpster rental business just like I treated my other business. Giving good customer service, reasonable prices, showing up when you said you would show up, being nice."
It's one person doing all of it. Jeff answers the phone, quotes the job, drives the truck and sets the dumpster. No crew, no call center. If he misses your call, he calls you right back.
Asked what he's proudest of, he doesn't mention equipment or numbers. "Building a solid, reputable small business in the Wayne County area."
Since 2022, Jeff has delivered more than 2,000 dumpsters himself, serving customers across ten towns and five counties on both sides of the Ohio line. He even puts the prices online, so you know what to expect before you call.
Jeff's been a pilot since 2000, and flying is part of why this company exists. He started it partly "to make a little extra money for flying." The dumpster route funds the hangar time.
He's lived in Richmond for 35 years. The yard's on South H Street, the service area is a 40-mile circle around it, and his pitch is one sentence long: "If you're looking for someone that's friendly and reliable with reasonable prices, then I'm the man."
Ten towns, five counties, two states, all inside about 40 miles of the Richmond yard.
